A group from a division of IBM in Switzerland has developed a analog-digital converter (DAC) ultra-fast and very efficient in energy consumption which, according to the company, could allow large data centers to share data at speeds four times higher than the current ones.

The technology would allow the data transfer rates between nodes connected to these systems to be from 200 to 400 Gbps. These DACs would take advantage of the capacity of long-distance fiber optic channels, and that would result in a benefit for all users.

The DAC is still a prototype, but during the event Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) that is being held in San Francisco, its developers explained that a previous version is already being used for commercial DACs that will be manufactured by Semtech Corp.

This solution could be vital to take on the growth in data consumption that has been experienced on the Internet for years: today the daily traffic reaches two exabytes per day, 20 million times higher than it was in 1992.

Another remarkable factor of this discovery is the fact that this converter achieves those results with remarkable energy efficiency, and Semtech is already producing it using a 32 nanometer integration process.

Google and VMware have signed an agreement that will allow conventional Windows applicationscan run on Chrome OS, in an important step more to give even greater relevance to this operating system and others Chromebooks who had a remarkable 2013.

These low-cost laptops are aimed at working with cloud services, but at Google they have been offering more and more "local" services for some time, and the possibility to run Windows applications it will give them an important added value.

Chromebooks managed to capture 21% of laptop sales in the United States during 2013 according to NPD data, although those data were later clarified to highlight that that percentage did not include the most important distribution channels, physical and online shops, and it was limited only to the quota in the educational, business and governmental segment.

Although that incidence is not as high as that study seemed to suggest, the growth could be important: the possibility of run Windows applications thanks to virtualization It would open the doors to the use of Chromebooks in business environments, for example. In that offer would be added the guarantees offered by Chrome OS in terms of security, with an operating system very focused on ensuring that the security of the Internet session is well protected through various techniques.

At the moment companies can acquire the call VMware Horizon Desktop as a Service, but VMware engineers They are preparing an application which will be available in the Chrome Web Store.
