IBM presents Sovereign Core: technology designed for digital sovereignty

BM has announced IBM Sovereign Core, a new software foundation that allows the deployment of AI infrastructure and workloads with full control over data, operations and governance, within a specific jurisdiction.

Beyond data localization, Sovereign Core focuses on who manages the systems, encryption keys, and regulatory compliance, with traceability and continuous audits.

The five main threats in IT security:

– Phishing: Phishing involves sending e-mails that appear legitimate but are intended to trick the user into sharing confidential information, such as passwords or bank details. It is like fishing, where the author hopes to capture the prey.

– Malicious Software (Malware): Malware is a generic term that includes viruses, trojans and ransomware. It is maliciously installed on the victim's device with the intention of causing damage or stealing information. You can imagine it as an unwanted intruder on your computer.

– Ransomware: A specialized variant of malware that encrypts user data, blocking access until a ransom is paid. It is similar to someone locking you out of your home and demanding money to let you in.

– DDoS attacks (Distributed Denial of Service):
Such an attack overloads a system with so many requests that it collapses, leaving legitimate services inaccessible to users. We could compare it to a crowd blocking the entrance to a shop.

– Social engineering: Consists of manipulating people to perform actions or reveal confidential information. More than a technological attack, it's like a mind game that exploits trust.

Microsoft puts its AI copilot everywhere, even in Windows

Copilot, Microsoft's “everyday AI companion,” is ready. During its presentation in New York last September 21, the Redmond firm announced the start of its deployment in Windows 11, from September 26, and later in the Bing engine, the Edge browser and the Microsoft 365 suite .

For Windows 11, Assistant integration will happen as part of the 11 22H2 update, for which Microsoft promises 150 new features leveraging AI capabilities. Once installed, Microsoft Copilot can be activated via the taskbar or the Win + C keyboard shortcut.

We will find summarizing capabilities, image generation (with the Cocreator Paint tool) or help for making videos (with the Clipchamp tool). Users will be able to familiarize themselves with these new uses and ways of interacting with the system in natural language. For example, they can ask Copilot to organize windows on the desktop, turn on dark mode, or find music to focus on. The AI will then suggest a playlist ready to launch in an app like Spotify.

“Copilot will uniquely integrate the context and intelligence of the web, your work data and what you're doing right now on your PC to provide better support, with your privacy and security as a priority" said Microsoft.

Although the September 26 Windows 11 update is optional, Copilot will also be included in the 23H2 annual update in the fourth quarter. Microsoft is careful to clarify that "Copilot in Windows will be enabled by default, but under your control with Microsoft Intune policy or group policy."

As for Microsoft 365, after several months of beta, Copilot will be released on November 1st. Generative AI will support all tasks in Outlook, Word, Excel or Loop, OneNote, and OneDrive. Also included will be Microsoft 365 Chat, a conversational agent capable of navigating user data (emails, meetings, conversations, documents) but also the web.

Unlike the Windows version which is free, Copilot will be billed for around thirty euros per month and per user in Microsoft 365.

Growing Increase in Ransomware Attacks: Why is the Threat Multiplying?

After a relatively quiet period during 2022, cybercriminals are back stronger than ever. Ransomware attacks, which decreased dramatically last year, have multiplied in recent months, with cybercriminals using increasingly aggressive methods.

Experts at Chainalysis, a company specializing in blockchain monitoring, saw a significant reduction in the number of ransomware attacks last year. Cybercriminals got less than $500 million in ransom demanded in cryptocurrencies during this period.

However, 2023 has seen a worrying reversal in this trend. In the first six months of the year, hackers have extorted $449.1 million. If this trend continues, the annual haul could reach as high as $898.6 million, approaching the 2021 record.

At the same time, Chainalysis and other observers, such as ReliaQuest, have seen an increase in ransomware activity. Some groups, such as Lockbit, which can now attack Mac users, have stepped up their efforts.

Despite a decline in earnings last year, criminals have developed "more extreme" extortion tactics, according to Chainalysis' Jackie Burns Koven. Faced with the refusal of their victims to pay, many hackers are resorting to publishing sensitive data and violating personal privacy as an intimidation tactic.

In addition, the first half of 2023 has seen the emergence of a new ransomware group called Royal, which mainly targets US companies, as well as the emergence of Rorschach, a mysterious malware that has established itself as the world's most feared ransomware.

The proliferation of attacks is also due to the rise of ransomware as a service (RaaS). These malware are available by subscription, allowing any aspiring hacker to deploy ransomware without the need for extensive technical knowledge.

This combination of aggressive extortion methods and accessibility to ransomware services has led to a dramatic increase in attacks. It is crucial that businesses and individuals are more vigilant than ever and take appropriate measures to protect themselves.

It's already Friday! Disconnect from Work, but not from Cybersecurity

oh yeah We made it. That moment we've been waiting for since Monday morning at 8:31 has arrived. It's that magical moment, that moment when the stars move apart and everything makes sense: it's Friday! Time to abandon our zealous commitment to the eternal pounding of keyboards, to leave the bright blue screens behind and, perhaps, to become a little more human (or so we hope).

But, being the bearer of unpleasant realities that I am, I must remind you of a small, but crucial, truth. While you plan to spend the weekend enjoying the sun and forgetting that 18-character passwords exist, hackers… Oh, they sure know how to have a good weekend. They love a good Friday night. But not for the same reasons as us. Whether they're in a dark, dusty place that looks like something out of a sci-fi movie, or just lounging on their couch with a laptop and a snack, they don't bridge. Hackers are here to ruin the party. And I'm sorry to reveal this harsh reality, but when they see you disconnect... that's when they connect.

“But I just wanted a quiet weekend!” I know, my friend. me too

And believe me, my intention is not to spoil the fun for you. On the contrary, I'm here to make sure you can enjoy your rest without worries.

So here are a few tips to keep uninvited partygoers at bay:

Keep your devices up to date. Yes, I too hate those updates that seem to come at the worst possible time, but believe me, there is no worse time than a cyber attack;
Avoid opening suspicious emails. If you receive an email with the subject line “You've won a trip to Hawaii!”, you're more likely to end up with a virus than a stay at a five-star resort;
Change passwords regularly. Yes, it's a headache. Yes, it's hard to remember them all. But you know what's harder? Recover all your information after a data theft;
Remember: if you have doubts about a link or document, do not click. Not that it says you've won the lottery or that you have the opportunity to invest in a gold mine. Surely the only mine you will find will be one of trouble;
And last but not least, don't forget to make regular backups of your most important information. Because even if a cybercriminal decides to have a party with your files, at least you'll have a “plan B”.

You see, it's not that hard, right? It only takes a few minutes to make sure your weekend stays free of cybercriminals.

And now, with a clear conscience, you can go enjoy your Friday. Go to the beach, enjoy a cold beer with some peanuts, read that book you've been putting off, or just relax.

With that, I leave you to go enjoy my own weekend. But don't worry, I'll be back on Monday, unless some hacker decides to pay me a visit… ???
